Baluchari is one of the most prominent creations of the rich weaving tradition of eastern India.

Baluchari is one of the most prominent creations of the rich weaving tradition of eastern India. It originated some five hundred years back in a small place named Baluchar  on the bank of The Ganges in West Bengal. Hence the name, Baluchari.

The weavers Baluchar later migrated to Bishnupur in Bankura district of West Bengal where they improved and perfected the art under the patronage of Mallya dynasty who ruled from Bishnupur.

Hallmark of Baluchari is its richly dyed silk and intricate handwork on anchal depicting mythological characters and  scenes from Mahabharata and Ramayana. The saree is also known for  subtlety of the hand work and application of colour combination that appeals to the finer senses.

This saree is one my favourites from my very modest collection of Balicharis. What appeals to me in this saree is perfection and elegance of the soothing colour combination. It's a perfect wear for occasions where loudness is not so welcomed.
