Bishnupur, the land of terracotta art in West Bengal

Bishnupur, the land of terracotta art in West Bengal and the capital town of Mallya dynasty during 17th and 18th century, is also famous for  its silk handlooms known as Bishnupuri silk and Baluchari sarees.  During the Mallya dynasty, the town became a prominent centre for art and culture and artisans and craftsmen migrated to the town from other regions. Among them were a group of weavers from Murshidabad displaced by flooding of Bhagirathi river. Today's Bishnupuri silk sarees are products of the tradition and artisanship created by those weavers.
The speciality of Bishnupuri silk is its finest fabric and quality of weaving resulting in lightweight and soft material.  For printing and painting, normally natural colours are used that brings in additional freshness.
